IF LAWYERS CAN BE JUDGES, JUDGES CAN BE LAWYERS.

IF LAWYERS CAN BE JUDGES, JUDGES CAN BE LAWYERS

Nigeria, allow retired Judges to
Practice law after retirement.
Private practice lawyers, practice law
Till death “unlawfully” separates them,
From the practice of law.
Retired judges practicing law,
Elevates the practice of law,
Humbles and demystifies current Judges.
Retired Judges practicing law,
Now subject to charges of contempt
Of court, and legal malpractice,
They once inflicted on Lawyers.

Behavior of current Judges are
Tempered, as high-handed Judges
Are repaid in same coins, by their
Erstwhile victims, now turned Judges.
Are these not benefits to legal
Practice and jurisprudence?
Fear of intimidation and influence buying,
By retired Judges are exaggerated, as
Public and lawyers will carefully scrutinize,
All cases involving retired Judges,
Practicing law once again as lawyers,
But not in the courts they presided as Judges.

There is no arbitrary cutoff age,
For human senility and dementia.
As the Great Zik of Africa puts it;
”there are young old men and
Then there are old young men”
Age does not equate with mental age.
Give retired judges a chance,
To improve legal practice in Nigeria,
As it obtains in several countries.
If lawyers can be Judges,
Judges can be lawyers, and
Legal jurisprudence benefits.
