IMO STATE, NIGERIA, A RUDDERLESS STATE
The Senate President Alhaji Dr. Bukola Saraki recently characterized Dr. Goodluck Jonathan as all around good person but not experienced for leadership. Oloye, Dr. Olusola Saraki, Bukola’s father was a leader, his son Bukola was a two-time Governor of Kwara State, a Senator since 2011, and Senate President since 2015. Apparently, he did not benefit from his father’s or his own political experience.
What has Bukola Saraki done to arrest the extrajudicial and extra constitutional actions of Alhaji Major General Muhammadu Buhari? Examples include disobeying court orders, using the Army as Police, unlawful detentions, hounding of opponents with State apparatuses, killings of Nigerians by fellow Fulani tribesmen, disregard for National and tribal character in appointments, and condoning financial malfeasance by relatives and associates. The inexperienced Goodluck Jonathan’s record is stellar when compared to the experienced Buhari-Tinubu-Saraki-Dogara administration.
In Imo State, there is another APC member, Governor Rochas Okorocha who has experience in the running of NGOs and in governance. He is a two term governor, whose second term in office has been abysmal and underwhelming. Instead of providing direction to the state, Okorocha has been busy molding statues of inconsequential African leaders such as Jacob Zuma of South Africa and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia. What of Nelson Mandela, Thomas Sankara, and Amílcar Cabral?
Vice President Pastor Professor Yemi Osinbajo recently went on an inspection tour of the Okorocha’s statues giving them the imprimatur of the APC Federal Government. Statues of Buhari, Osinbajo, Saraki, Okorocha, and Dogara are next in line. These statues may be smelted by the next administration and turned into more useful implements such as plows.
Recently, Okorocha created a Ministry of Happiness and Purpose Fulfillment. It would be insane to disbelieve any act attributed to Okorocha. He may wake up one morning and decide to move the capital of Imo State to Orlu . The Commissioner of Happiness and Couple Fulfillment is the Governor’s female sibling. To create another Ministry that falls under the portfolio of the Governor is idiotic. Is a statue of Happiness next? Can a Commissioner of Happiness and Couple Fulfillment compel another Commissioner to enhance happiness by providing pipe-borne water? No, but the Governor can through budgetary allocations and directives.
Bukola Saraki should be concerned with the failings of the APC leadership at the state and local levels and concentrate on his legislative duties. Is Goodluck Jonathan preventing Saraki from checking the excesses of the Buhari-Tinubu administration? The “more experienced” APC administration has failed Nigerians woefully and will surely pay a severe price in 2019. Next, Jonathan will be blamed for Operation Python Dance, Operation Crocodile Tears, and creation of Boko Haram.
The failure of Imo State Legislators, Elders, and Autonomous Traditional Rulers (>1000) in checking the excesses of Governor Okorocha is indeed shameful and un-Igbo. Every village in Imo State has a King (Eze).
Where is the budgetary allocation for the statues? Was there a bidding process? Who decides on personalities to be honored? These are the duties of the Imo State Legislators. Instead of checking the Governor, lurid jokes about statues are circulating on the social media. While humor can provide temporary relief from stress or maladministration, no nation, state, or individual can laugh her problems away.
As the saying goes, “The fish starts rotting from the head.” The APC State Legislators are emulating the inept APC Federal Legislators headed by Bukola Saraki and Yakubu Dogara. When the legislatures at the Federal and State levels, which are supposed to act as counterbalances to the executives shirk their responsibilities, the country and nation becomes rudderless.
Maybe the state and federal legislatures should be abolished and the money wasted used in economic development. Judges have been cowed by the combined gestapo services of the DSS and the EFCC. The Judiciary is fearful and has lost its independence. Judges will surely get their revenge when they disqualify Muhammadu Buhari from contesting in 2019 for failure to produce his WASC result.
Africastallestman continues to be baffled by Nigerian politicians and politics.
