NIGERIA’S ILLEGAL BAIL SYSTEM
A peasant allegedly steals 1,000 Naira.
Bail is set at 20 million Naira, and both sureties must be millionaires, with one owning landed property in Abuja.
A blogger publicly expresses her/his opinion as part of free speech.
The blogger is arrested, and bail is set at 200 million Naira, and both sureties must be billionaires, with one owning landed property in London.
A political activist exposes governmental corruption.
The activist is arrested, and bail is set at 2 trillion Naira, and both sureties must be trillionaires, with one owning landed property on the moon.
Are these real judges, or are they agents of the Executive branch of the government?
Why not landed property in Lokoja, Ijebu-Igbo, Umuleri, or Bonny?
Ridiculous bail amounts designed to illegally imprison:
Political opponents
The poor
Government critics
Anti-corruption activists, and
Suppress dissent
Since Nigerian courts may take 30 years to adjudicate a case, an innocent person could be illegally imprisoned for 30 years.
ECOWAS and the UN need to look into judicial malfeasance in Nigeria.
