OBASANJO AND THE SHARIANIZATION OF NIGERIA

Before Obasanjo,
Sharia law was
a private religious law
restricted to Islamists.

Obasanjo,
in a bid for a third term,
permitted the extension of Sharia
into the public sphere.

Starting with
Ahmad Sani Yerima of Zamfara State,
Obasanjo watched as
Sharia laws usurped Civil laws
in 12 Northern States.

Christians, Atheists,
Traditional Religionists,
and Other Religious Ikpulities
became subject to Sharia law,
and not Civil laws.

Sharia Hisbah police
became the State police
in 12 Northern States,
whereas non-Islamic States
lacked State police agencies.

The Hisbah police can
confiscate alcohol from Christians,
shave the dreadlocks of non-Islamists,
and, is forcing non-Islamists
to marry 13-year-olds next?

After the Sharianization of Zamfara,
Alhaji Ahmad Sani Yerima,
an ex-Governor of Zamfara State,
promptly married a 13-year-old Egyptian child
after paying a humongous
bride price to the Egyptian parents.

The same 12 Northern Sharia States
would gladly partake
in the sharing of VAT,
from the sale of alcohol,
in alcohol-consuming,
non-Islamic 24 States.

If this is not religious perfidy,
what is it?
Islamists must not
profit from the sale of alcohol
in non-Islamic States.

Obasanjo,
your “achievements” pale
compared to the harm, witch-hunting,
and redundant agencies
you foisted on Nigeria.

These agencies,
like the EFCC were
part of Obasanjo’s intimidating
and harassing tactics
to aid Obasanjo’s ill-advised third term.
