SPIRITUALITY IS A BIPOLAR CONCEPT OR CONSTRUCT?
Spirituality does not imply belief in God or adherence to a particular religion.
Non-religious persons can be spiritual as are religious persons.
Spirituality can be bad or good.
Spirituality is that restraining or enabling inner “voice” that modulates our behavior.
It is that voice that restrains you from driving off a cliff after giving the idea a thought.
Spirituality is a continuum and can be manifested as behavior on any point on the continuum at particular times.
Spirituality can operate subconsciously but can also be influenced by religion, meditation, yoga, and rumination.
What makes a serial killer spare some victims and not others?
Maybe, the killer’s spirit fluctuates along this continuum.
If the killer accosts a victim while on the bad end, the victim is killed.
Conversely, a victim accosted in good “spirit” is spared.
For the religious, spirituality is a continuum between the Devil at one end and God at the other end.
For non-believers, it is a continuum between good and bad, or truth and lies, or kindness and misanthropy.
Synonyms for spirituality include mind, conscience, and sixth sense.
In conclusion, we are all spiritual beings not to be confused with being religious as a deeply religious person, may be bereft of good “spirit” and would gladly kill without compunction.
